What’s In Dateland, AZ?

From the perspective of a camper in the Dateland Travel Center Rv Park.

When you arrive in Dateland there is a travel center that has a gas station, date shakes, and currently, a Pizza hut which is new. This space has changed from a bar to a Quiznos, and who knows what else. Don’t get too excited about Pizza Hut they serve personal pan pizzas under a heat lamp.

School

There is also a school out here called Dateland Elementary. The local school runs K-8th grade. The city population is less than 500 so, most of the kids are bussed in from a city nearby.

Post office

There are post office boxes on the school property but if you’re staying in the RV park you can pick up your mail and boxes at the travel center, the manager will call you when they arrive.

Things you can do in Dateland AZ are pretty limited.

Most people out here come for work or work here. There are trains that run by frequently at a fast pace and there are plenty of open lands to possibly ride or use ATV’s on.

Unfortunately, there is no park you can visit or any other type of community activity center. So, you’re left to do what folks in the good ‘ol days used to do and use your imagination. OH, Wait, and the internet. So, grateful for the internet.

Shopping

If you need clothing or groceries you’ll need to travel to Yuma AZ or farther to get all of your supplies. If you forget something there isn’t anything other than the gas station and it only has the basics. The grocery stores are busy in Yuma, no matter where you go and their prices are not great. If you have a Sam’s Club membership, try to stock up so you can steer clear of the frequent travel outside the city.

The gas station prices are also high, so much so that the locals complain. It is the only place in town to grab a quick drink or snack and it doesn’t come cheap.

The travel center has jewelry, souvenirs, clothing items, and a lot of dates and date products. If you like dates you are in for a treat!.

RV Travel Center Campground

The campground is clean the visitors are quiet the trains are loud but, other than that it’s quite peaceful around here. Showers and washer/dryer facilities are on-site with coded access, nothing fancy in fact a little dated but they work so, I’ll take it. The current cost is $1.25 to dry $1.50 to wash they only take quarters. There isn’t a change maker but if you’re used to life on the road you probably have a roll or two for the occasion. This campsite is fairly empty.

The sunsets and sunrise are beautiful. There are rows and rows of date palm trees at the end of the travel center road. There is also a dead-end road out here by the camp that I like to use for walking and biking with the kids. It could be a nice test pad for a go-cart or something similar.

Oasis RV Park

We are currently on a waiting list and have no personal experience with this park but, it does have a pool and tends to be harder to get into. It is owned and operated by a nice married couple named Jim and Pepper. It has great reviews for a desert rv park and I hope to get in there before 3it darts heating up around here.

Nearby Dateland

If you like history and relics there is a petroglyph site about 30 miles east on the highway. Also, Tombstone and Tucson are about 2- 21/2 hours past this site. Tombstone is recommended especially if you like the wild west, which I certainly do.

Summary

This is the desert, no sugar coating it. There are amazing wild birds, snakes and wolves. The border patrol is what is replacing a police car out here. Be careful but do enjoy what the land offers, a lot of which is perspective. Be prepared for your stay, watch out for wild drivers and buy things to keep you comfortable in the temperatures.
